Long Term Care Planning

I have seen first-hand how the high cost of custodial care can ravage a family's finances and force children and parents to hock everything they own, including their home and heirlooms. The whole experience is heartbreaking. I know -- my family's assets evaporated when my mother needed care during her three year fight with cancer

The Risk is Significant

About seventy percent of us will need help putting on clothes, taking baths or showers, preparing meals, taking medications, staying hydrated, shopping, driving, visiting the doctor, and even remembering. They are called 'activities of daily living'.

Think about it -- if a person cannot perform these activities themselves and needs the help of a salaried caregiver or nurse 24/7, where will the money come from to pay for care services?

Over the years, I have helped people facing virtually every long term care scenario possible. Seeing the smile of relief on my clients' faces when they know they have a plan in place that provides care services and mitigates the loss of everything they have worked for keeps me motivated to help others.

What Can You Do?

  • Seek advice on developing a comprehensive financial and legal plan that manages financial risks.
  • Seek advice on managing your estate with a plan that includes, at minimum, a will, durable power of attorney, and advance healthcare directive.
  • Seek advice on obtaining long term care insurance to pay for most or all senior care giving expenses, so the family's liquid, real, and personal assets can remain intact as much as possible and avoid becoming a burden to your family.
