Goal Setting

by: Liz Centi

As 2021 winds down, you may find yourself (as many do) looking to set goals for the new year.

Most successful leaders realize the importance of this task. Goals are important in every area of your life: professional, personal, financial, health, and community service, to name a few. Identifying goals helps to define what’s truly important in your life. They provide the focus and drive to accomplish long-term achievements. There is nothing like achieving a goal to boost your self-confidence.

When thinking about goals, it’s important to create a bigger picture and break it down into smaller, digestible targets. Acknowledging the smaller milestones along the way is also crucial to staying motivated and on track.

There are many methods you can use to put your goals in motion:

  • Keep a journal – just be sure to revisit it regularly to make sure you remain on course.

  • Design a vision board – display it where you can see it every day so your goals stay in the forefront of your mind.

  • Enlist others and make it a team effort – sharing your goals with others can increase productivity and enable you to hold each other accountable.

Goals don’t need to be etched in stone, either. Be flexible with yourself. Check in on them at least quarterly to see your progress. Have you set them too high? Too low? It’s okay to adjust them accordingly to avoid discouragement.
