Zachary Walton is a Partner of the Firm with over 24 years of experience practicing environmental law. He represents developers of onshore wind and solar energy projects in California, and has obtained all necessary federal, state and local approvals for their construction and operation. He represents water purveyors with facilities throughout the state in connection with water rights and supply matters, including obtaining a Section 7 biological opinion and related state approvals for the operation of a dam and bypass flows to benefit anadromous fish. He also has substantial experience with redeveloping contaminated properties, including negotiating cleanup agreements, and he regularly oversees environmental due diligence projects for residential, commercial and industrial property throughout the United States.
Mr. Walton has worked closely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Marine Fisheries Service, Army Corps of Engineers, Environmental Protection Agency, Bureau of Land Management and the United States Forest Service, as well as the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, California Energy Commission, State Water Resources Control Board, all of the Regional Water Quality Control Boards, the California Department of Toxic Substances Control, and California’s air quality management districts.
Mr. Walton has been listed as a Super Lawyer in California since 2012. He previously served on the Executive Committee of the Environmental Law Section of the State Bar of California and the editorial board of the California Water Law & Policy Reporter. Mr. Walton was a partner at the international law firm of Paul Hastings, where he was Vice-Chair of the San Francisco Office and Co-Chair of the Climate Change and Sustainability Practice Group, and a founding partner of the San Francisco office of Downey Brand LLP. He received a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1992, where he graduated with distinction, and a J.D. from the Vanderbilt School of Law in 1995.
