Another underlying theme of Admiral McRaven's book is about making incorrect assumptions about people and/or situations.

I cannot tell you how many times in life I have met someone and was convinced I had ZERO in common with them, only for them to later become very good friends. We wound up connecting on a much deeper level and it was pleasantly surprising.
