Chief Transformation Officer
Tom Flanagan is Chief Transformation Officer at ISSQUARED Inc. an IT
Infrastructure & Security Services company that for the past 5 years has been on INC 5000’s list of fastest growing companies. He oversees HR, Finance, Sales and Strategy. For 7 years prior, Tom was VP and Partner at IBM where he advised some of the largest companies in the world in operations, business performance, digitaltransformation, artificial intelligence, blockchain, robotics, and automation.
Prior to joining IBM, Tom spent seven years at biotech company AMGEN as CIO and SVP where he oversaw all Information Systems. He also led the Sourcing and Procurement, Enterprise Risk, and Operational Excellence teams. In 2008 he was selected by his CIO peers as one of the Top 10 Global Leaders and Innovators, and in 2010 was elected by his peers to the CIO Hall of Fame.
Before Amgen, Tom spent eight years at MCI in a variety of executive capacities including CIO, and SVP of Global Service Delivery. Before joining MCI, he spent 24 years as a nuclear submarine officer in the US Navy being the first in his Naval Academy class selected to Admiral. He served as Director of Political Military Affairs for Asia Pacific on the Joint Chiefs of Staff under Colin Powell, and was the only military member of the 1994 State Department team that negotiated the Nuclear Framework Agreement freezing North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.
Tom was the Commodore of a squadron of nine nuclear attack submarines. He
served on five nuclear submarines, including tours as Division Officer, Chief
Engineer, Executive Officer of a Trident SSBN, and Commanding Officer of a 688 Class fast attack SSN. As a Lieutenant, Tom briefed the PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES in a one on one discussion about unmanned cruise missiles, data, satellite technology, and the impending revolution in modern warfare.
Tom is a graduate of Harvard University’s Senior Official’s National Security course, and a graduate with distinction from the U.S. Naval War College specializing in Maritime Operations. He earned an MS in Nuclear Engineering from MIT after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy with a BS in Mathematics. Tom is a qualified Chief Engineer on a Nuclear Propulsion Plant.
Tom has competed at the Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Hawaii and in 1981 was the Navy’s Decathlon Champion.
